Home Teeth Whitening Systems from Love Family Dental
We’ve seen it – a growing demand for teeth whitening. It is one of the most popular and relatively easy ways for people to enhance their smile and overall appearance. With the popularity comes multiple methods and options for doing it yourself at home or in-office with professional staff. How do you know what’s right for you?
It is always important to talk to your dentist before attempting any kind of teeth whitening solution because not all teeth will actually whiten the same, depending on what causes the yellowing to begin with. For instance, if you read our blog on reasons teeth brown, you will see whitening will work on many cases but not on replacements like caps, veneers, crowns or fillings. It also won’t always work if tooth discoloration is due to medications or tooth injury.
Tooth Whitening Options
The most basic systems are usually the least expensive and require more effort with less noticeable results, depending on your situation.
1. Whitening Toothpastes contain special chemical agents that provide additional stain removal. These are definitely superficial and only remove stains on the surface of the tooth. You can typically expect to see the tooth improve by about one shade, so don’t expect dramatic results.
2. Whitening Strips and Gels may yield slightly better results over a long period of time, typically three to four months. Strips are applied like stickers over the teeth and set for about 30 minutes 2x per day whereas the gels are applied with a brush.
3. Tray whitening systems can be purchased over-the-counter or from the dentist, the difference being customization of the trays to fit your mouth and the strength of the bleach. These systems are generally very effective because they include bleach in addition to the peroxide used in previously mentioned solutions. The tray is worn for a period of time, between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the strength of the solution.
While in-office bleaching may be more expensive than toothpastes or gels, you can be guaranteed faster and better results. The dentist has very specialized equipment utilizing either heat, laser or even ultra-violet lights. For the most dramatic results, several appointments may be needed but you and your dentist can determine what is best for you.
While all methods mentioned above will have a positive effect on your smile, the results vary in degree. Your perfect smile begins with regular brushing and flossing, too. We recommend setting an initial appointment to verify what can be accomplished to improve the brightness of your smile. Call Love Family Dentistry in Astoria for a consultation.
